The Jack and Hodgie Bricke Scholarship Fund
Jack and Hodgie Bricke were bound by their passion for philosophical and international education.
A scholar, teacher, and mentor to generations of KU philosophy students, Jack Bricke was a devoted member of the KU philosophy department for 47 years until his retirement in 2015. The late Hodgie Bricke retired in 2020 as KU’s Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs, where she championed the transformative value of international education, profoundly impacting thousands of students and scholars.
Jack and Hodgie’s personal and professional lives were shaped by their own travels—years spent in their beloved Scotland, where Jack earned his PhD at the University of Edinburgh, and voyages across Europe and all over the world.
As a tribute to the Brickes’ legacy, the KU Department of Philosophy has created the “Jack and Hodgie Bricke Scholarship.” This scholarship will support KU undergraduate students with financial needs who enroll in the Philosophy Department’s own faculty-led study abroad program, Philosophy in Paris, as well as KU philosophy majors pursuing independent study abroad opportunities.
In their son, Ian Bricke’s, words, “This fund reflects my parents’ deepest values: intellectual curiosity, philosophical exploration, and the horizon-broadening power of international experience. Please join us in contributing to this fund, a fitting tribute to my parents’ lives, careers, and convictions.”
