Biography —
I grew up in Indiana, did my undergrad at DePauw University (Greencastle), and went to grad school at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. I taught for many years at California State University-Long Beach before coming to KU in 2018.

- Ethics, including: well-being, metaethics, moral psychology, value theory, and medical ethics
Areas of Competence:
- History of ethics, political philosophy, existentialism and phenomenology, pragmatism
Research —
My main area of scholarly research is ethics. I work on the nature (and measurement) of personal well-being and happiness, and on issues relating to well-being in metaethics, moral psychology, value theory, medical ethics, and political philosophy. I also have an interest in the history of ethics, especially the tacit meta-ethical views of Aristotle, Hobbes, Hume, the existentialists, and the American Pragmatists.

Service —
I have served on numerous Department and College-level committees, I do a great deal of referee work for leading ethics and philosophy journals, and I am an Associate Editor at the Journal of Ethics.
